The stepfather
This extract was, for me, the best out of all three extracts we looked at. It did the best at thrilling and exciting me; as soon after i just had the watch the whole thing as the suspense was too much. How does the sequence establish the tone of the film (generate suspense The film did extremely well is establishing the tone as in the first 10 seconds to you know exactly what kind of film its going to be all the way through. The film starts with a sinister and eerie feel as there is a long pause on a medium shot of a house; establishing shot of winter as house is covered in snow. The is slow resending music; in the minor key giving all the senses a nervous and on edge feel. There is then a continuous moving shot of the camera turning; a car we assume as you can hear the wheels of the car screeching. The car then turns back to the house and we see the person in the car; filling out some sort of form; the form said this house had been 'cancelled' off this list? from this we know somethings wrong; to support this feeling there is a slow bell chime just making sure we knows there is something wrong with this house. The next cut is a slow pan over sharp objects layed out in a very specific way, but why? what for? The house seems to be somewhat normal; family pictures all around, very clean and tidy. The man comes in and starts to play some christmas music; all very civilised and daily. The then contrast with the individual camera shots of the dead family all around the room juxtaposing with the happy christmas music. We then see an extremey contrasting image of washing up dishes in the sink one side; then the other is blood stained knives. How does the film introduce when and where is is set? We know from that form of some sort that the place where is is set is called 'salt lake city' which i assume is somewhere in America; as we don't have the luxury in this clip of accents as there is no dialogue; but we assume from the big houses and the form. When it is set was a bit of an enigma as there were not many clues as this extract just focuses on one house; but portrayed by the clips i assume in the 20-21st century as the house is very modern and so i the car and driveway and this is the only shots we have to tell us.How does the sequence introduce characters? We are introduced the main man in the bathroom; performing a daily routine we guess. But it seems a bit odd, he starts off with hair dye, then shaves of him beard, then put in his contacts; what is he trying to cover up? why is he doing this? i found this very strange introduction to this character but this enigma is what created the suspense. We then see is making toast and packing his things and it all seems rather normal; which 5 seconds after is contrasted with the images of the dead bodies on the floor and his blood stained weapons in the sink; from that point we know he will be the antagonist for this film How does the film use text titles to tell you about the themes of the film? The text titles did very well in establishing a few things for me as 'the stepfather' transitioned on to the screen next to the man in the bathroom connoting that he will be the main character and we will follow his story. The font they used is thin and sharp; quick even, portraying to me this mans story and personality; on even creates an image of the sharp and quick killings he has performed, even the titles did well to create this creepy and eerie atmosphere this film holds.
Over all this film did extremely well at thrilling me as well and leaving me in suspense waiting for the next scene to unveil this sick mind of the psychopath.
