On monday we had a talk from the two video commissioners from Polydor. Polydor is a British record label that is under the Universal music group.
They first spoke about budget of the videos they make; they said it depended on how the commercial the act is. The budget can range from 5k-250k.
Mainstream acts like Ellie Goulding- their videos have to be safe, and appealing to a wide audience! Also usually have to be appropriate for television music channels if they really want a lot of publicity. Ellie Gouldings video: Anything could happen
This didnt go down to well, i think because of the content because it wasnt like the usual, fun, bubbly Ellie that appeals to her audience.
Large scale of investment in production, distributing and marketing. This is why labels play it safe, to reduce risk and maximise profits. Different audience groups, multiple terratorys.
For new acts videos must position them to the target audience they are hoping to reach out to. Which acts are they similar too? "oh they're the new...." this is what new acts wish to achieve.
Music videos are the biggest marketing tool we have, it is the single thing an acts spends most money on.
its important to have a visual style and visual theme that links throughout: we looked at La Roux video Kiss and not tell. Which has this retro feel throughout!
For our Video that we are making our visual theme is.. fun, fashion and vibrance. Our visual style is colour, bright and neon. They are linked throughout by girls and colour.
